Situated in the sunny east coast, Te Ahuru O Ruhuaariki (Whakatāne Emergency Department) serves a rural population with a catchment area up to the East Cape. We are an 18 bed department that sees ~25000 attendances/year of which more than 25% are paediatric.

As a department we are committed to delivering equitable outcomes for Māori, culturally safe care and upholding te Tiriti.

We are part of an organisation that has a larger base hospital, Tauranga which is approximately 90km away.

Whakatāne Hospital is accredited for 12 months of training with the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine programme.

Working at Whakatāne Hospital you will be part of a small, highly skilled, and supportive team. We have access to inpatient specialist teams, but also the challenges of delivering healthcare to a rural community, in a smaller hospital.

As a training registrar, you will have bespoke rostering, with non-clinical days, 1:4 weekends and will be given the opportunity to choose a non-clinical project.
